What is the Flint Tropics?

The Flint Tropics are a fictional basketball team from the sports movie Semi-Pro. Their home court is in Flint, Michigan. Jackie Moon, the film's main character, owns the team.

The story takes place in 1976, during a time when the NBA was planning to merge with the ABA. Only four teams from the ABA were set to join the NBA. Although the Flint Tropics were an underdog team in the ABA, they still had dreams of joining the NBA. Flint was a small market, so the NBA wasn’t particularly interested in bringing the Tropics into the fold. As a result, they set a lot of harsh conditions for the team to meet to be considered for the merger.

At the movie's end, they were told that the NBA no longer planned to merge with their team. However, they played their final game to honor themselves.
